Carrying the boat

Testing the waters

After a long hiatus due to my crazy student teaching schedule, it's time to start posting again. Here's Rachel at the Lindamood Cup races yesterday. Jane came down for the day, her first experience of crew races. Cool, overcast weather turned to sunny and gorgeous by the end of the day. The varsity 4 and varsity 8 women won both races by open water. There was more competition in the V4 race. But the greatest drama of the day was the major confrontation between the V4 girls and Coach Parlin, who lost his temper when the girls pulled into view wearing silly bathing caps. They spent a good twenty minutes in the boat house office (out of public view), arguing and crying and explaining. After the first pass, Coach Parlin threw Rachel out of the V8 boat. Eventually cooler heads prevailed, he apologized and reinstated Rachel. I was really proud of the girls for standing up for themselves and working up to a compromise. Hopefully Coach P has gotten a better handle on working with young women.
